New music website The Song Collective releases first episode
Wednesday, 1 February 2012
John White stands on the edge of a small jetty in picturesque Port Chalmers holding a borrowed guitar, as low grey clouds threaten rain, during the impromptu filming of the first episode for new music website The Song Collective. The episode features the title track, from the much-adored Dunedin songwriter John White’s third solo album The Inkadies. The dream-like tale, ramshackle filming, and DIY ethic is the beginning of a little website with big hopes.
The website founded by musician, publicist, and student Brooke Singer was created with the intention of capturing on film an extensive collection of songs, the stories behind them and the wide variety of musicians that inhabit and visit New Zealand’s shores. All set to a backdrop of beaches, gardens, kitchens, ballrooms, backyard cricket, and boathouses.
The second episode coming out next week features the little known, but immensely talented Oamaruvian songstress Marla Jean, singing a song about surviving the Christchurch earthquake on February 22nd.
The Song Collective consists of a bunch of talented lads and ladies, who are based around the country, and who will be filming and writing for the website. It follows in the footsteps of a raft of overseas websites, including the likes of Frances Le Blogieteque, and London’s Black cab sessions, that feature artists performing acoustically, filmed in various locations. The Song Collective will also feature news, interviews, and gig reviews.
The Song Collective website was created with the assistance of a grant from APRA NZ.
The Song Collective wants to hear all your music related news, gossip, upcoming gig information and welcomes your interested in being “collected” for our website!
