THE MUSIC
I pick up the guitar and start strumming/plucking a tune in whatever chord my fingers land on. I change to another chord and can usually hear something or feel the potential of a melody or lyric somewhere in my throat. Usually the strum gives me an indication of what style or mood I’m about to embark on – that helps with the writing. I then start singing. I always make up the words to start off with, adlib – sometimes I can really nail the lyrics and they just make sense and sometimes they sound really stupid, but this device always helps me further shape my lyrics, my story and form what will become my melody.
THE BUSINESS
Today with technology you can promote yourself and your music easily with the Internet. It’s the way of the future. 10 years ago it was all about shopping your demos around to different record companies but now you can post it on line - youtube, myspace, set up your own website – there are many other avenues today available for an artist to get their music out there. It’s exciting days for the artist – not so much for the companies, but we were never meant to be working for them in the first place.
